The similated moon regolith is based on Apollo lunar observations and closely matches the composition of regolith in the mare areas of the moon.  It is a powder made from crushed volcanic ash erupted from a volcano in Arizona. The similated Mars regolith is based on Viking data and closely matches the regolith in the bright areas of Mars. It is a powder made from weathered volcanic ash from a volcano in Hawaii.
