The Robotic Lunar Exploration Program

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)- The LRO is being built at the Goddard Space Center and is currently scheduled for launch in October, 2008.
It will carry six instruments and one technology demonstration intended to conduct investigations specifically targeted at preparing for future human exploration.
It will photograph and map the lunar surface from an altitude of approximately 30 miles, search for water ice deposits, and investigate space (solar) radiation.

The Lunar Lander- The Lunar Lander Mission is scheduled to launch not earlier than 2010.  It will demonstrate precision landings at targeted locations, evaluate landing environments, and determine if lunar resources can support a sustained human presence.

The Constellation Program

The concept and timeline for the Constellation Program were discussed on the front page of this website.   NASA's Constellation website
has lots of great information. Be sure to watch the videos by selecting the multimedia button on the left side of the page.
The following are some images of the various components taken from that website:

The Apollo Program
" The Apollo program was designed to land humans on the Moon and bring them back safely to Earth. Six of the missions (Apollo 11, 12,14, 15, 16, and 17) achieved this goal. Apollos 7 and 10 were Earth orbitng missions to test the Command and Lunar modules.  Apollos 8 and 10 tested various components while orbiting the Moon and returned photography of the lunar surface. Apollo 13 did not land on the Moon due to a malfunction, but also returned photographs.

Apollos 18, 19, and 20 were cancelled. "
